OUR STORY

KANAVAN KRUUNU
The company is run by entrepreneur Sari Liljeblom and her family. Kanavan Kruunu is located along the picturesque Vääksy Canal, and the restaurant itself is built in an old, beautifully renovated building that is part of local history.
Kanavan Kruunu's mission is to offer great food, drink and experiences - with a local twist.

A glimpse into history
The building known as the Canal Café was built by merchant Lauri Suominen, who said at the time that he had built: "The most beautiful house in Vääksy" – a beautiful two-story building with a mansard roof was completed in 1931. Lauri Suominen lived in the house until the mid-1930s, running a café and shop there. In the late 1930s, the building housed a guesthouse, a travel agency and a café.

Asikkalan Osuusliike Kauppakunta bought the building in 1949 and in the 1970s the ground floor was divided again into smaller shops and a café.

Esko Rapala bought the building from the City Council in 1978 and carried out a very extensive renovation during the following winter. After the renovation in 1979, one of the first tenants was the fabric store Auliisa (Aulikki Pulkki). Auliisa operated in the building until 1996. At the same time, Raija Laurila ran a yarn and small goods store at the other end of the building.

The building, which was under threat of demolition, was renovated by Seppo Aaltonen into Kanavan Café and apartments in the summer of 1997. After the Aaltonens retired, they sold the café at the end of 2002. After them, several café and restaurant entrepreneurs have operated in the property.

In the fall of 2009, the building changed hands again. After extensive renovation work, on May Day 2010, the village of Vääksy received its long-awaited à la carte restaurant and interior design store. The building was owned until 2023 by Kiinteistö Oy Kanavan kulma, whose tenant until 2023 was Kanavan Kunkku Oy, and Elektroniikkahuolto Raimo Sinisalo.

At the beginning of 2023, Kanavan Kruunu was born – welcome to be part of Kruunu's journey.
